When I turned, they were gone.
Gurning, churning bodies writhe at me as I scan the heads bobbing for beats. My mind was as far from mine as I’m happy to get, happy to be there. The DJ finished and the crowd roared in chemical appreciation - nobody plays other people’s music like this guy ‘cept maybe the next guy, he does it pretty good too.
‘Water,’ I mime to nobody and everyone, crowd parting for the middle-aged Moses. Pats on the back for the old guy who broke sweat with the young pups at the front and lost all his friends.
Maybe they died; they were pretty old.
I laugh to myself.
My smile ripples out. A toothy EMP made for EDM by Ecstasy, who the fuck couldn’t be an MC!
BRISTOL MASSIVE!
Bar hop, adrenaline drop, need a pick-me-up to keep me up now my friends have…fucked off.
Don’t stop.
Pill pop, that’s my lot.
‘Good idea,’ says the bad idea bear, who lives in my brain, eats my shame, sleeps under blankets of mandy antics.
We’re going on a water hunt… a water hunt… I sing my song as the bar queue grows.
Nod, nod, smile, smile, slap, clap, congra-tu-latt, nod, smile, gurn, grind.
The beats roll up and over as we lap against the bar.
A hundred disconnected jelly brains rubbing.
Drums and drums and drums and drums and…lace. Black lace back lace, blonde hair, glittered eyes, smile wide, our ripples cross, creating smooth water between us.
‘Tequila?’
‘Tequila.’
Never a bad idea…
We shoot the shots and mime our thoughts, make our way front left and drop into the rapids, arms aloft, stretching out, hands touch, energy flow, eyes touch, beats go…
Drums and Drums and drums and lace
The music binds us combines us, the tunes remind us that this is where we belong.
Sometimes connected, sometimes watching, sometimes holding, the moment’s clocking, music tick-tocking, bass lines dropping.
Our bodies’ fleeting touch, electric lady fingers stroke skin through wet cotton.
A party for thousands attended by two, alone in the crowd, alone no more.
Until…
Night yawns as morning comes. Music ends and dance floor lovers hold the moment tight till empty hands separate.
Held out, held together, held forever
‘You had me at tequila. ’
‘I’ll find you when you’re ready.’
She evaporates into mist.
Today is the first day after the night.
The first day, I tried to find her again.
Unnamed unknown, a memory, a feeling, nothing more
Every day, listening for,
Drums and Drums and Drums and lace.
Really been a long time since I’ve done molly… crazy evocative of the feeling.
Really enjoyed this. could really feel that this was just flowing out as your mind came up with it and each word triggered the next.
im not an afficionado of the rave scene so i dont know how well this rings true but it was a lyrical rhythmic rhyming pleasure to read and im guessing you DO know all about the scene so you had a reservoir of experience to bust the dam.
