A Tailor as Old as Time

A Philosophical Science Fiction short by S M Garratt
2

Welcome to the Oort Cloud Podcast—it's essentially me sharing the stories that I and several other writers have crafted under the experimental genre of Philosophical Science Fiction.

What is Philosophical Sci-Fi, you may ask? For me, it is utilising everything that is great about science fiction: world-building, strange races, weird rituals, fantastical religions, a good dose of adventure, and maybe even some romance to explore what it means to be human. The world we live in is increasingly devoid of meaning and belief. Everything has to be deconstructed, interrogated and often, ironically, dismissed. It is increasingly difficult to explore ideas profoundly and create dialogue and conversation around topics that matter. Who are we, why do we exist, how can we be/do better? I use science fiction to explore these ideas in a safe environment, where allegory and metaphor cushion the reader from the stark reality of the world we live in. Safe spaces to discuss radical ideas around our limited perception of what life really is, what consciousness is, and how we are connected to the universe are increasingly limited and marginalised. These are the most important conversations we should have as humans. If we spent more time exploring how we are connected, our differences would become less critical. There are powerful negative forces at work in the world that gain from creating division by reducing collective ideas of unity. I believe that these forces can be defeated through storytelling, utilising the power of creativity to create new ideas, new language and a template for a collective sensibility that doesn’t rely on organised fiction designed to control and limit people.

Instead, we should utilize the power of storytelling to unite people through a celebration of knowledge, learning, exploration, and sharing. I will explore that with my stories, and I welcome everyone to come and share their thoughts.
